A gorgeous day a dawning so far here in the North Woods. Woke to first feeble light at 4:40 and couldn't get back to sleep. Finally got up at 5:15 and watched the sun crack the horizon. The pets got an early breakfast; hope they don't think this is the new schedule. Was 47 degrees, but pleasant outside when I decided to go get milk, eggs, juice, bacon at the 24-hour soopa-market -- start off the week with a big breakfast. About 4 shoppers and a dozen route salesmen stocking their products. Glad I wasn't working already.

Coffee is now done and I'm getting a look at what parts of the yard get the earliest morning sun. A couple pleasant surprises, such as the new flower bed I put in yesterday gets a good dose before going into shade for a couple hours behind the big cedars. All in all, a very pleasant morning, more so in a moment when I take that first slug of java.

Pekka - I'm a morning person, just not a sociable morning person. Special moments for me were walking through my back yard in Virginia, coffee cup in hand, micromanaging all of my annuals and perienniels. I doubt if they'd ever grown had I not checked on them every morning.

BTW - and just to bug you - how does a "feeble" light "crack" the horizon?

Good morning! I love these cool summer mornings. I took the dog for a walk this morning and it was only 42 degrees.

I bought a paint sprayer & spray gun to apply solid stain on the rest of the house on Friday. I was busy with other stuff on Saturday, but n Sunday I fired it up and went to town. I finished 3/4 of the house. I think the hardest part of the job left will be taping and covering all the screens on the screen porch. That spray gun was definitely the way to go. It covers the rough sawn wood siding in one coat and as long as you're careful with the sprayer, no drip marks. The setup and clean up times are a bit longer than with regular painting, but the painting (or staining in my case) went so much faster.

I'm hoping to finish up next weekend. So far, I've got 2 full days invested in the job. Next time, I think I'll pay someone to do this job.

Snake Eyes -- feeble in the pre-dawn, not so feeble by the time it "cracked" the horizon on such a clear morning. As you said, the morning survey of the gardens is a great personal time, and I haven't even wandered the backyard yet -- too focused on the new bed. Ahh, what's that I hear? Bacon sizzling as reino makes a hearty Up North kinda breakfast. Mmmmmmmmm.

I had bacon and stawberry pancakes this morning. I hate mornings, I hate talking, I hate moving, I hate being awake. But a nice breakfast like that sure helps get me moving.

No feeble sunlight here, just rain clouds. Supposed to clear up by this afternoon.

Pekka - I agree, the sun growing from feeble to more robust as it "rises". I just wanted to bug you and it was the only avenue. I envy your breakfast. I'm munching frozen waffles and then it's out the door for the gym. Saw the Brewers stomp the Twins yesterday. Hadn't been to a ballgame since the days of Harmon Killebrew in the very early 60's.

I have yet to go to a pro baseball game and I love the Reds. It’s the cheapest pro sport out there. I saw a billboard for a family package that was four tickets, four dogs and four drinks for $59. Then again it was for the Tigers! LOL! I have been to a few A games of the Dayton Dragons. Great fun but tickets are hard to get. They sell out even the mid-week games.

This must be Poets' Day, so
As the rosey, red fingers of dawn crept over the horizon, I was up and breaking camp. Drove 920 miles yesterday from Grinnell, IA, to Abrams Campground in GSMNP. Then continued around the southwest part of the Park to Bryson City in about two hours. Breakfast you say, found coffee and a blueberry muffin at Deal's Gap, NC, home of the 300+ survivors. That is the number of curves on which motorcyclists love speeding while driving from TN to Deal's Gap. Every year a few of them fail to make it and go on to motorcycle heaven. At Deal's Gap they have a motel for motorcyclists only!

Picked up my mail and stopped at Steve Moon's tire place just outside town. He ordered three new tires for me which should be here by noon tomorrow. So I should be home late tomorrow night after another 11 hour drive.

Had to pull another tick off my body yesterday morning. Sucker did not want to let go and took off some of my skin! I put some antibiodic on sore spot and hope it heals OK. The place where I had to cut one out has healed just fine.

Hugs to all you girls. To all you guys, go take a hike!

good morning, everyone!!!

I have been up a while: 8am my time. showered, had my morning coffee, but I didn't take a stroll around the house. I was reading up on Black Walnut trees and I think I'll try to find one at a local nursery. I'm not sure if we have enuf frost-free days for their survival (150 is recommended) My dad sent me 2 seedllings a few years back and they both died but they were pretty little. Need to clean the fish tank before I head out for my daily weeding regime. still have half an acre of knapweed to dig out...

don't know what knapweed is????? here let me send you some seed: it's a real pretty purple flower!!!

just becareful: it spreads like h$ll.

Just don't plant the thing close to anything you are trying to grow or that you don't want ruined. I have one in my back yard and it makes a huge mess with falling nuts, falling stems, and my white fence gets stained every fall from little black stained squirrle feet.

This morning's revielle was the best I ever had, courtesy of radio station WOJB, Lac Courte O'Reilles Indian Reservation, public radio. First was a song played on Native American flutes. I don't know what song it was, but it began to cut gently through the fog of my sleep. This was followed by a single female Native American voice, lightly accompanied by an acoustic guitar, singing "You Are My Sunshine." It was so hauntingly beautiful and piercingly clear that it penetrated the rest of my sleep and I was completely awake. I listened intently, not wanting to miss a word or a note. I felt both sad and honored when it was over. It seemed to make a statement about what living in the Northwoods is all about...if you pay attention.

It's going to be a great day.

My wake up call comes from the next room. It goes something like this "Mooooorrrrnnnninnng Tiiimmmee! Wake up!" in a cutsey three year old voice. This morning it was accompanied by a call to come snuggle in her bed. =) Snuggling is a great way to wake up.

Morning all! I'm anxious for 9am. I started searching for technical pants for some swamp wading and other fun stuff I'll be doing soon, last night. I found both of the styles I was specifcally looking for at over 1/2 off! Of course online neither is available in my size (what else is new), but who knows what might be available over the phone. Cross your fingers for me and hope there was a canceled order somewhere.

You just reminded me of my brother taking our mother sailing in that green and white Sunfish so many moons ago.

The only thing he gave her to hold onto was the sheet. The breeze freshened; he couldn't turn into the wind quite fast enough; Mom had a death-grip on that rope --- and over they went, LOL

Sass - I don't know why this word cracks me up, but it's just funny as hell: "Technical pants". Maybe it's like explaining to a cop: "Well Officer, technically they are pants, but actually..."

Sass and Tilt - I've described my mother on here before. She's 82, feisty and slowed a little by a stroke she had slightly more than a year ago. She was raised in the North Country and is happiest in a boat or a neighborhood bar. I've decided to do what I can to create opportunities for her to re-experience the things she enjoyed the most (does that mean take her fishing and get her drunk?). Of course this will also create memories for me, and I will inherit that vast estate estimated at $15.37 (before expenses).
