Yes, I saw a piliated last week on the suet feeder 15 feet from my bedroom window...I see them often and hear them more often. I also see bald eagles and red tail hawks a few times a week...living near a river and in the woods is great for birdlife...unfortunately, I occasionally get a dumb ass young male bear wandering through...gr-r-r-r-r....

Awsome! We have a lot of red tails here and a large colony of baldies around Lake Guntersville. I see them all the time when I'm kayaking.

Got a good, long look at the hawk today. I believe it's a Northern Harrier. He was about 10 feet away from the kitchen window for about five minutes, just sitting on the deck rail like he owned the joint. Needless to say, all the other birdies were making themselves scarce except for a crow that was slightly bigger than the hawk.

at the moment, red winged blackbirds, mourning doves, bluejays...

I don't think the birds like the new feeder, or else they don't like regular birdseed since I've spoiled them on black oil sunflowere seeds...

A whole flock of cedar waxwings today! I've never seen them in this area before. They are tied for my favorite bird w/ chickadee.

cedar waxwings passed through here last month - they come and eat all the old fruit from the pear trees

today I saw a kingfisher down by the river

Sweet.

I'm still trying to identify the brown/gray/black bird that was flying around the back yard singing up a storm earlier this afternoon.

Yesterday I was home for the majority of the day and the birdsong in the yard was some I'd never heard before. While Birch was grilling burgers he spotted the bird. We had an American Redstart hanging around. First time I've seen one.

Those redstarts can be loud.

That finch looks mighty proud of himself, hikin' Mike.

We had some sort of big crow sitting on the peak of the roof early this morning, singing his beak off.

Stovie...that is so funny!!!!

My poor birds have been neglected as of late. I throw them the stale bread, cereal etc. but bird seed hasn't been in theh budget lately. I feel bad.

Finally identified my "hey baby" hawks in the neighborhood. They're light phase red-shouldered hawks, who constantly make homing calls to each other, all year round. The calls have changed a bit lately though, since it's spring, but they're still noisy. It really does sound like they're saying "hey baby" to each other.

when i lived in the country my feeders were visited by every single bird that lives here but since i live in the city now, either the stupid squirrels or the euro starlings so attack them that i have pretty much given up on feeding any birds. kind of sucks because it was always cool to observe the rare breeds.. oh well.

I've got a yankee dipper and a yankee whipper hanging on cables from a tree branch.

They really are squirrel proof. I just clap the starlings away.

The four feeding ports are easily accessible via the perch ring, and the interior of the chamber is designed to direct seed into the seed ports. Birds will not set it off, not even larger species like Woodpeckers and Cardinals. But the minute a squirrel hops on to the perch, the motor is triggered and the feeder begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip and is thrown gently from the perch.

i'd like it better if it flung the squirrel harshly.

We had some of those in Florida. They were pretty ballsy around cats.

I have a pair of as-yet unidentified large woodpeckers making a racket out back every day as they search for the perfect spot for a nest. They aren't pileated, and I haven't seen them here before. Time to drag out the Sibley guide.

that's pretty cool! I don't get many woodpeckers out here... we did get a downy woodpecker that hung around for a few days, but that was it.

I've got chickadees scouting all of my trees for nest sites. The funny thing is they keep returning to an ugly little decorative ceramic bird house hanging low in a Japanese maple out front. That ought to be interesting.
