This evenings thunderstorms brought 2 pairs of Baltimore Orioles to sip on strawberry jelly, a pair of rose-breasted grosbeaks, many gold and purple finches, ruby-throated hummers and a blue jay at my birdfeeders all at the same time...quite amazing considering I've not seen much of orioles or grosbeaks this summer...

I've got an aggressive goldfinch in my back yard. If I interrupt his morning bath in the koi bin, he just sits there and tells me off. Nice. I do like to watch him dive bomb bazillions of bugs each day though. My house finches are thinking of building another nest in one of my other hanging pots. Joy. Those birds are super noisy at 5:30 in the morning. I guess it's better than what my neighbor Becky has; she's going to have a baby any day now, and each morning there's 5 crows waiting outside her bedroom window, cawing for their breakfast. Her husband started feeding them toast bits about a month ago. She likes the birds but wants to kill her husband.

Funny
Every time someone floats this thread, someone always mentions a well-fed cat...

has anyone come up with a bear proof bird feeder? That is to say one that is something other than hanging the feeder like a bear bag.

The only bearproof feeder I've seen was hung outside of a second story window.

Something stole our suet feeder over the weekend, that or it blew away in the wind we had Sunday. It was fully loaded with a pound of suet too. I've searched the hillside for it, but couldn't locate it. So- what got it off the tree without leaving a mark on the rather tender bark? It's a young curly willow by the way.

Other than that, we have bazillions of purple and/or house finches, sparrows, cardinals, titmice, and 3 persistent mourning doves.

Treebait, do you have deer in your yard? I have a female and her doe come by to eat dinner out of the feeder occassionally.

Saw some bluebirds checking out the birdhouse. No finches yet, but lots of cardinals.

The squirrels carry away our suet feeders. Fortunately they leave them in the yard for refill.

The deer (if any) leave the feeders alone. The suet feeder's hook was wedged onto a branch, and not easy to remove.

Lesser Goldfinches. They like our new feeder.

Mocking Birds are singing at night.

I've seen Starlings at the grocery store, but not in our neighborhood, thank God.

Lots of hawks and falcons, they are catching doves and pocket gophers lately, and even mice. A couple of Red Tails tried for the ducks last week and missed. It's a good thing, Steve would be sad if they got the ducks.

I did at first, but then my oldest step son brought home a kitten. At first I said "NO WAY" but they begged and pleaded so I gave in. He is now about 7 years old, stays in the house, gets a bath every 2-3 weeks and sleeps with me. He kinda grew on me, but when he is gone....NO MORE!

That's one thing I can say, he is smart and he knows where he can and can't go. I have never caught him on the counter, and only once on the table and he got smacked, and as far as I know he has never got back up there. Of course when we ain't home there is no telling where he is climbing on. But like I said, when he dies, that's it.

The whole family loves him. My Mom and Dad hates cats, but after a few visits they actually go out of their way to play with him. Looks like all the other TTers are in hibernation. Guess it's time for me too.

Lemmee see; mourning doves, of course, eastern screech-owls, rufous hummingbirds, carolina chickadees, tufted titmouse, downy woodpeckers, red-bellied woodpeckers, northern flickers (AKA Yellowhammer, the state bird of ALabama), ladder-backed woodpeckers, carolina wrens, robins, catbirds, northern mockingbirds, red-winged blackbirds, european starlings, common grackles, brown-headed cowbirds, blue jays, cedar waxwings, rose-breasted grosbeaks (rare visitors), northern cardinals. indigo buntings, dark-eyed juncos, house finches, chipping sparrows, lark sparrows, house sparrows, wilson's warblers, hooded warblers. and a pidgeon-sized hawk that I have been unable to identify so far. I put a stool in front of the back door so my cats can watch 'em...kitty TV, LOL.

I've got cardinals duking it out for control of backyard territory, and a family of bluebirds residing on my neighbors' rooftop.

The barometer is dropping fast this morning, along with the temperature. Many of the smaller birds are already heading for cover.

Matahari, have you actually seen the pileated woodpeckers? I haven't heard any in my yard, but they're all over my favorite hiking spots in TN. I've never seen one but they can be heard for miles.

BTW, I hope you're feeling better soon.
