Now she will read lots of picture books. Many of trips to the library are ahead for you.” 4:18:24 PM 10/03/02 “Things have changed somewhat since I was in high school. My son is a sophomore. He went over to a young lady's home and spelled out "HOMECOMING? ALEX" on her front lawn with toilet paper. She answered back on our lawn "YES. BAILEY". Awww. Love via buttwipe. Ain't dat cute? BTW, his date was erected Homecoming Princess for their class which means he has to get up on stage with her and stuff. "Lesson learned, son. Only ask homely girls to the dance."” 9:32:08 AM 10/04/02 “kleetn, is "erected" a typo or a freudian slip?” 9:35:40 AM 10/04/02 “You know Bailey too?” 9:46:26 AM 10/04/02 “THAT Bailey?!” 9:52:02 AM 10/04/02 “Sass, I love reading Good Night Moon w/ Newergirl. It's one of our favorites. Another really cute book that I would recommend, is Good Night Gorilla. It's kinda' funny and sweet.” 10:13:06 AM 10/04/02 “Sheep in a Jeep. Or is it called Ducks in a Truck? I don't know, but its cute. I don't have kids, but my niece read me a book about wolves last week, and my nephew ate my salad and called me "Mimi". That's the best I can do. Unless you want to know about my cats. :)” 11:08:11 AM 10/04/02 “My 16 y/o finished his bug collection project. THAT is an accomplishment!” 11:10:32 AM 10/04/02 “Mu kids don't smell funny anymore!” 11:14:46 AM 10/04/02 “Meow!” 11:21:22 AM 10/04/02 “What about Pi kids?” 11:54:27 AM 10/04/02 “bit -- that's the average in India, 3.14159 kids per family. I have more than a kappa kids myself.” 12:06:08 PM 10/04/02 “We just came back from my sons flag football game. they are 3-0 they are so cute to watch. My son needs to work on catching the ball. But he did get a couple of tackles! that my bragging for the day!” 1:17:11 PM 10/05/02 Help, here? “Well, My Son... <;o| Heh,Heh, Seriously, 11y/o, 6th grade (first year of middle-school,sigh,) All-A honor roll, left tackle on his PeeWee football team (5ft.5in.-155lb.), But STILL thinks it's okay that His pack weighs less than mine. I'm working on the idea that it would be way-cool for him to carry everything, leaving dear old dad just a fanny pack with a few essentials. He just ain't buying it yet! Maybe I need to slow down on the mental stimulation bit?” 7:11:16 AM 10/06/02 “Just look at my new photo on Phils page....” 11:36:13 AM 10/06/02 “So my 18 year old comes home for home cooked food, to do some laundry and asks if he can use the camera that I let him use in his HS photo class. Sure I say. Today I go look for the camera I use. ooops. Somebody took it, left me the camera he "abuses". Took my favorite lense too.” 10:29:19 PM 10/06/02 “well now my sons team is 4-0 yyyeeaahhh!!!!” 8:39:52 AM 10/07/02 “Just got a call from my son. He was in a shooting tournament (obstacle courses with steel targets) and won his class (Novice). His prize was a Springfield HD 40 semi-auto. He was 19th out of about 250 participants. He is pretty stoked.” 10:33:49 PM 10/13/02 “Kewl Phil!” 10:39:25 PM 10/13/02 “Congrats to your son, Phil. We did baby dedications today at church. With several hundred onlookers, the Pastor was holding both kids while praying for them. We figure with all those prayers, the infants will now ease up and be little angels from here on out (that means sleeping straight through the night!) These kids bring us such joy. We had no idea.” 1:18:21 AM 10/14/02 I'm so proud! “I just got a letter that my fourth grader was selected to participate in the gifted and talented program. I think that it is for fourth graders and up in our school, but I will ask to confirm this. I am so proud of her, but I think that this means more work for me as well. Wait til she hears this. More homework!” 2:19:44 PM 10/29/02 “Congrats LyndyS, just make sure gifted and talented, doesn't mean stress and pressure.” 2:23:42 PM 10/29/02 “I think that New Jersey means stress and pressure. I think that gifted and talented means more work of dubious benefit.” 2:26:32 PM 10/29/02 “Lyndy, Congrats to you and your daughter. Yes there will be more homework for you both!! But it will all be worth it in the end! Give yourself a pat on the back because your doing something right!! Your a good mom and a good person and it shows through your children!” 2:28:06 PM 10/29/02 “Thanks Mapleleaf, I'm pretty pleased with her right now. She had been having some social problems, and was telling me that some girls that she used to be friends with, were mean now. I thought this was just her "perception", but Friday night I drove a bunch of them to a girl scout event. A few of these girls spent the whole drive there and back (about 75 min total) ragging about many different kids in their classes. My daughter stayed quiet until one of her good friends became a target, and then she jumped in to defend. I mostly stayed out of it, so as not to cause my daughter a loss of status, but afterwards I told her that I was proud of her and that I could see that she was right about the other girls becoming mean. She obviously knows who to be friends with and who not to.” 2:35:29 PM 10/29/02 “Its a very hard age your daughter is in. My son also has problems with the kids at school as ive stated before. Im just glad I don't have to go through all that stuff again. Just giving your daughter all the support is that best thing you can do for her. Other then beating the crap out of them! Naw, we can't do that can we?” 2:40:27 PM 10/29/02 “The classmates? I think that has been done, in the past. I used to threaten to have a talk with their mothers, but at the age of 10, they don't think much of that threat.” 2:47:03 PM 10/29/02 “I had a boy go after my daughter when she was about that age. I mean really going after her in a sexual way. Long story short I had the mother in tears and the boy shaking like a leaf and the guidence conc. scared of me. That was the one and only time ive ever had to deal with someone like that. I hated having to do it but I wanted to stop the boy in his tracks. Its hard being a parent and wanting to kill the little buggers but knowing you cant and teach your child to do the right thing.” 3:17:26 PM 10/29/02 “Lyndy, that is cool. Four of my kids are in the gifted program here in PA, but here, they just go for "enrichment"...we just refuse to have them doing extra projects, good grief they and we are busy enough as it is.....” 7:18:44 PM 10/29/02 Tough one “My daughter was in the gifted, or advanced, or whatever it is called around the country. She had some stressful times, midnight tears over homework, etc. I often wondered what drove her, and worried that it was me, heck, maybe in a subconcious way it was/is. The last year of high school was probably the worst, college applications, school work, extra curricular stuff, etc. But . . . . The pay off? She's now a freshman at Notre Dame, making great grades, and in HER words, "For $8.66 an minute, I'm having the time of my life." I tell you folks, it doesn't get any better than this.” 8:54:18 PM 10/29/02 “My daughter's best friend got into the program as well, and her mother and I are going to see the people who run it to see what the deal is. I have heard that some of the projects in the past seemed more like busy work and we want to make sure that this program goes for quality not quantity. I'm not interested in overstressing my daughter. She was crying last night because she got a B on a Gym test, of all things.” 5:31:21 AM 10/30/02 “My second grader got all checks and plusses on his report card.” 6:44:25 AM 10/30/02 “my sons flag football team are 8-0 best in his age group!~” 7:57:50 AM 10/30/02 “Mapleleaf, that is an impressive record. So are you going to let him play football in high school? He needs to strengthen and stretch his knees then. Lots of knee injuries happen in football.” 8:31:11 AM 10/30/02 “no way, Im having a hard time just dealing with flag football. i remeber my mother not letting my brother play football. He was peeved at her for a long time. I love watching the little guys they are so cute!” 8:35:04 AM 10/30/02 “My husband's father worked in emergency rooms as a doctor, and he would not let my husband play football as a result of all the injuries he saw. My husband still feels angry about this. I am thankful, though, because he will be able to be active for many more years.” 8:46:32 AM 10/30/02 “It was my kindergartener’s turn to bring home a book they had made as a class. Each page held a self-portrait. Hers was surprisingly good, but she’s always been good with her hands. We spent hours pointing out how much better hers was and how pathetic some of here classmates are. What fun!” 11:23:18 AM 10/30/02 “Yeah those books are great, as long as your kid can draw. My kids love to make up stories on the computer and then draw pictures on each page and then make it into a book. The county has a Resource Center where you can go and get the cover laminated so that stapled together the books last a long time.” 11:30:13 AM 10/30/02 “My son is built like a tank, and this being Alabama, people keep saying he'll make a great football player. I don't plan on letting him play football. He'll thank me when he's older and can still walk.” 11:32:36 AM 10/30/02 “At last report, my son had had a successful ballet audition to dance in a performance of The Nutcracker. Since then, he has been scoring goals at record pace on his Under-8 soccer team. Well, this morning, he was thrilled to see his name in print in the local paper! Each team can submit a report of a couple of games - of course, it's a chance to get every kid's name in the paper. But he thinks it was because a reporter was at the game and noticed that he "calmly put the ball in the corner of the net from well outside the box." He took the article to school to show all his friends and teachers - talk about excitement!” 12:59:24 PM 11/05/02 “my sons football team are now 10-0 hhhmmmmmm Martyb, i think that is sooooo cool. I hope you save it and frame it!!! hay what paper? sometimes they put things like that on line.” 7:58:05 PM 11/05/02 “10-0 that is some good @ss kicking!!!! 8)” 7:59:06 PM 11/05/02 “On-line account of the "whoppin'" Cameron's team gave to the Whoppers. Scroll down to the Under-8 Coed, 2nd para.” 8:03:39 PM 11/05/02 World Run Day "Philadelphia" - 11/10/2002 “This run was a pretty flat 5k starting and ending at North Penn High School in Lansdale, PA. My 18-year-old son, who is a senior in HS and just finished his Cross Country season, was meeting/running with/running against a couple of buddies there. My 14-year-old daughter was there for her first road race. She ran well as a 7th grader on the track team last spring, and is gunning for the Middle School record in the mile. But she is just starting to run (other than all the running for field hockey and soccer.) She had run the 5k distance only three times. Also, she was tired from a soccer tournament yesterday. And as for me, I have only run 7 or 8 times in the past year, although I have been getting a lot of good workouts via other activities. We arrived at the race site at 8am, needing to register for the race which started at 9am. As my son started filling out his form, I realized I didn't have my checkbook. I had picked it up, but had left in in the kitchen at home. I told him I had forgotten it, and a woman standing there--who knew us although I didn't know her--offered to pay for us and I could pay her back later. That was real nice of her! The temp was around 50 but it was windy so it was a little cold. We warmed up, and waited around for the start of the race, which didn't go off until at least 9:10. There were (guessing) about 200 runners there, so not too bad, but I did wait and start my watch as we crossed the starting line, maybe 7 or 8 seconds after the start of the race. I saw no clock at the start/finish line and wondered what we would find out on the course. It turns out that not only were there no clocks, but the splits were not even marked. So we were entirely on our own for pacing. We ran a good pace throughout, faster than our training runs had been but I felt pretty confident that we could sustain the pace and finish strong. My right shin bothered me, and I felt a general tightness in my legs after about the first mile, but nothing too severe. We entered the parking lot with perhaps 600 yards to go and my daughter started sounding bad--not wheezing exactly but--just pretty whipped, I guess. I asked if she wanted to slow down and she said no. Had she said yes, I would have slowed down with her and finished with her. Since she said no...I decided to go ahead and kick it in, and let her finish at her own pace. Partly, I was looking at my watch and realizing my goal for the race was attainable. I had stated that I wanted to break 25 minutes. Privately, I thought 24 minutes might be possible. So I finished pretty strong, the clock said 24:10, although my watch said something like 24:25. I don't know what happened, maybe they started the race clock late. My daughter finished about 15 seconds behind me. I was pretty happy with my own run, and pretty happy with hers, too, although I was concerned that her struggle at the end might discourage her. I think she did great considering how little training she has done. My son, it turns out, won the race in 16:30 or 16:40. All in all, a good day!” 3:20:58 PM 11/12/02 “good for your son! :-) i can't believe you abandoned your daughter like that, though... J/K!!” 3:28:38 PM 11/12/02 “hee hee, I knew I'd hear that! Well...I asked her if she wanted to slow down and she said no. Had she said yes, I would have slowed down and finished with her. And I also figured this was a good way to make sure that when she is ready to beat me, which will be someday very soon, she will not hesitate to do so. She'll know it is OK to go without me. That's what I will want her to do.” 3:33:33 PM 11/12/02 “Fritz, that's great! I like it that you do stuff like that w/ your kids. You're a good dad!” 4:14:15 PM 11/12/02 Soccer Update “Cameron had his final soccer game of 2002 last Saturday, so I hauled out my 35mm camera and zoom lens and shot a few photos, which I have posted here. His team played against one of the best teams, and they did quite well, shutting them out in the 2nd half. We (adults) officially don't keep score, but the kids told us that we either lost by one goal, tied, or won by one goal, depending on who you ask. Cameron had two assists. If you're familiar with 7-year-olds playing soccer, you will understand why getting credit for an assist might show up on the "bragging" thread even more so than scoring goals....” 5:12:54 PM 11/19/02 “Marty, those are some great action shots!! great work. GOOD FOR CAMERON!! I do know how importian its is to the little guys when they score. last year it was the last game of the season and my son caught the football for his one and only goal. I was right there to get it on tape. Ps, there team is now 13-0 YEAH!!” 6:24:49 PM 11/19/02 “Marty, those are some great action shots!! great work. GOOD FOR CAMERON!!
