This was probably posted somewhere down the line, but you can get cheap books on Amazon.com by buying used books.

I bought Zen Dog for $3+ and $3+ shipping. It came to $7.00. The book retails for $17.00.

Im just finishing up (for the umteenth time!) North To Cree Lake by A.L. Karras. Its the true story of the 7 years that the Auther and his brother spent as trappers in the north woods of Canada during the time of the great depression.

Streamweaver, if you like that type of book, track down Dangerous River by R.M. Patterson, about his explorations in the Nahanni River area of NW Territories in the 20s. After canoeing upstream, he overwintered twice running trap lines, also prospected, and was the first to bring back a photo of the big falls (Victoria?) on the South Nahanni.

I loved them. I've read all but 1 or 2. Another book by Fraser I liked is Mr. American. It's about an ex cowboy going back to his family home in England. It takes place just before WWI. A 90+ year old Flashy makes an appearance.

Another good series is the Sharpe's rifles. It takes place during the Napoleaonic wars.

Don't waste your time on "The Republican Noise Machine." I was hooked by the title and promo, but it's just a series of "he said, she said" and not very convincingly written.

Dub, Just picked up my copy of Brief History last night and began to reread it. I also have been meaning to reread Mere Christianity. One of my faves.

As far as the Chronicles go, I read the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to my oldest son when he was 3. We have also read the entire Potter series together. Now that Tucker is 9 and Luke is 4, I think it's time to get my Narnia series out and start again. They would love it.

Another good book for the kids is a book called Roverandom by Tolkien. It was written by him for his 4 year old son who had lost his favorite lead dog toy.

Any chance of getting all four books at that price still? The Lonesome Dove series that is. They are my favorite McMurtry series but I've probably come close to reading all his books.
On another note..I just finished "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown. Good mystery and full of research factoids to feed the inquiring mind. Next on to McMurtrys Berrybender series starting with "Sin Killer".

I left out that Lonesome Dove is my alltime favorite book. It's about time for another reading of it.

jvz - have you heard of a series by a guy named Guthrie? His first name escapes me. It's 3 books. The first one is "The Big Sky" and takes place in the 1820's at the tail end of the mtn men era. "The Way West" has one of the characters from the first book as a wagon train leader. "These Thousand Hills" takes place in the 1880's during the cattle boom. The first book really reminds me of Lonesome Dove.

Thanks for the tip on more reading material. If its like Lonesome Dove its worth a read. Did you read(if memory serves me) Zeke and Ned by McMurtry? Very good book but I don't have it anymore so I hope thats the right title.

That sounds like the correct title. I haven't read it yet.

It's not so much that it's like Lonesome Dove as the writing reminds me of Lonesome Dove. It's much shorter but somehow seems familiar. It was written in the late 30's/early 40's by a man that lived in Montana. This would have been a time when some of the true old timers were still living.

I am in the middle of "A Sand County Almanac." So far it's ok. I'd heard a good bit about this book and finally picked it up.

Next up will probably be "Seabiscuit" and then "A Crusade in Europe," by Eisenhower. I picked up a first edition of the Eisenhower book for $2 in the local used book store.

I’m on a Harlan Coben kick. I’ve read a lot of suspense/thriller novels but his writing is completely different. He hooks you from page 1 and presents you with this huge ball of thread that can’t possibly all be connected. You’re always guessing and figuring it’s just another big 180 degree twist and thus remaining obvious and insulting to your intelligence. But I never ever guess right. I normally read in small chunks when I get the spare time at work but his books lead me to MAKE time…normally until 3 AM.

I just finished the fourth and fifth books of the Harry Potter series. Can't wait for the sixth to come out. :)

My mother loaned me "The DeVinci Code" which I'll probably start next. Everyone I've known to read it says it's good. We'll see.

Bit, I just read Shakelton's own account of the furthest south journey, which is worth reading.
The worst Journey in the World about Scotts trip is certainly worth a look too. It's kind of intimidating in size, but gives a great insight into the expedition.

Angels and Demons was a good read, but it mirrors too closely to the Davinci Code in its storyline. I havent read anything except the 2 mentioned by him, but he seems to have found a framework he's comfortable in and he's scared to deviate. It would be nice if he stretched himself out alittle bit to see how his style of adventure/suspense would play out.

I've been reading "Love, Greg and Lauren," by Greg Manning, sent to me by a cousing. It describes Lauren's injury in the 9/11 attack and the course of her recovery. It's very touching, but having also survived burns, I can't be too objective. It was a best seller.

Amzon's description:

Early on the morning of September 11, 2001, Lauren Manning-a wife, the mother of a ten-month-old son, and a senior vice president and partner at Cantor Fitzgerald-came to work, as always, at One World Trade Center. As she stepped into the lobby, a fireball exploded from the elevator shaft, and in that split second her life was changed forever.

Lauren was burned over 82.5 percent of her body. As he watched his wife lie in a drug-induced coma in the ICU of the Burn Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Greg Manning began writing a daily journal. In the form of e-mails to family, friends, and colleagues, he recorded Lauren’s harrowing struggle-and his own tormented efforts to make sense of an act that defies all understanding. This book is that e-mail diary: detailed, intimate, inspiring messages that end, always, as if a prayer for a happy outcome: "Love,Greg and Lauren."
