I like when you ask an author what "they" read, it's always some dead author. I think they do it on purpose since some prolific authors wrote only a few books so you're reading them won't hurt the sales of you buying "their: books instead and the dead author is not writing anymore books for you to buy.

One author seemed to say he read books that seemed to be...well, not too good which would lead you back to reading his books. Could this be a conspiracy amongst authors?

"Of Men and Mountains" and "Round Ireland with a Fridge"

The first is a great look at the wilderness before good gear (and food! yikes) and LNT ethics. The second is just plain silly! It is about this guy that bets his friend that he can hitchhike around Ireland with a fridge. Journey is to be completed in a month. Funny stuff. :)

i just got done with one by Paul Auster, The Book of Illusions, and am starting another by him, The Music of Chance. they're really good! i've read one other by him before, but i forget the name...really good stories (fiction), but also they all have some kind of art-about-art theme going on.

While waiting for Dean Koontz's second installment of a book he wrote, "Odd Thomas", and now is releasing "Forever Odd", I picked up a Joy Fielding book that was on the library shelf called "Good Intentions". Her books have great reviews on Amazon.com, but the book is kind of...not too exciting and I'm more than half way through. It's about a woman who's divorcing and maybe dating and her lawyer and her husband problems. I think it's a little too real and almost a documentary with no pizzaz, yet I read on.

I also just got my 6th Stephanie Plum novel by Janet Evanovitch. Some think it's the same stories with different charactors, saying it's too formulatic, but people keeping going back for more. They are light fun easy reads, and with Stephanie Plum being a bounty hunter, you never know what she will get into.

twinkle, if you are referring to Dean Koontz's "Odd Thomas" you are correct. I don't even know why I like some of his books so much since I'm not into science fiction, but some of it is not so much science fiction, but about unearthly things where there may be a fine line between the both of them.

Typically, I am not a fan of mystery novels. However, during a visit to my favorite northern Michigan town, someone recommended a book by Barr, called A Superior Death, after hearing that I had backpacked Isle Royale. The book takes place on Isle Royale and in Lake Superior, surrounding it. I really enjoyed the book. Especially references to places on the island I had visited. I'm willing to bet her other Anna Pigeon books are equally as good! Are you enjoying that one?

I'm currently reading a book that was recommended to me nearly two years ago by a fellow TTer at FYAO... Artex. The book is The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz. It's the true story of a Pole and a small group of other prisoners who escaped a Soviet labor camp and walked from Siberia to India, in the 1940s. So far, I'm really into it.

As long as you don't take her books too seriously, they are good. Blood Lure annoyed me with some of its details... cotton sweatshirt on a park ranger in Alaska for example! Geez! I think I read/heard somewhere that she used to be a park ranger.

I did enjoy High Country. I listened to that one on audio about a year ago.

Good stuff if you want something easy and somewhat mindless to read. I was originally introduced to her by Sequoia (uh...bearmagnet?). I think it is cool that she writes about the national parks. And even cooler that she puts into in the front about what we can do to preserve them! :)

Another author to check out is Hanna Nyla. Point Last Seen. EXCELLENT! And much better than Barr, but she has only 3 books or so...

I normally don't go for political books but I've very impressed with Larry Elders's "Ten Things You Can't Say in America. One of the things that make him such a good writter is the fact that he uses common sense. Some of the topics are...

"Blacks are more racist than whites,"

"There's only a dime's worth of difference between Republicans and Democrats,"

"The media bias is real, widespread and destructive,"

"America's greatest problem is illegitimacy."

Nigal, I'll just stop the arguments (maybe) by saying Larry Elder is black. It always seems to be okay if a black person says something that's considered racist about their own people.

I never disliked blacks or any race of people, but I began to notice that when I was around blacks more, that they disliked white people, so it made me think twice about them. I still look at all people as individuals and try not to lump them together by race. Sometimes it's hard when you've had bad experiences with a particular race of people.

Well, I think I agree with Elder on one of the four:

"There's only a dime's worth of difference between Republicans and Democrats,"

Although given inflation and the polarization of the last 5 years, maybe its up to two bits.

“Nigal, I'll just stop the arguments (maybe) by saying Larry Elder is black. It always seems to be okay if a black person says something that's considered racist about their own people.”

While Larry pretty much sticks to racism between two separate races I would say in this case it is more of a case of policing your own. Due to white condescension many and most white people aren’t going to try and hold a black person to the same standards out of fear of being called a racist. If a black person like Elders or Bill Cosby speak up and point out where things need to change it is not so bad other than they get branded an Uncle Tom.
