Just finished "Brave Fathers, Gentle Heroes" by George Takiff about WWII fathers who had sons who fought in Viet Nam. Interesting book if you are into 20th Century US history, WWII or Vietnam. It is 90% interviews with veterans with some amazing stories. No pulled punches in this book.

Also just finished, "Good to Great" by Jim Collins. One of the best business leadership books out there, IMHO.

Recently read, "Combat Jump" by Ed Rugerro. Outstanding account of the invasion of Sicily. A must read book for anyone interested in WWII, Army, or paratrooper history.

"Be. Know. Do. Leadership the Army Way." Out standing book on leadership for anyone...especially if you are NOT in a military organization. Fast read.

I heard Life of Pi was excellent! It's high up on my list. However, I still have to get through the Dark Tower books. I'm almost done with DT4, and have three more to go. DT7 Just came out this week!

I highly recommend it. For a book about God it doesn't spend much time talking about Him. One funny line in the book has to do with how Christians like to capitalize too many words.

while in Ohio I picked up "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" from the Dragon Lance Chronicles.......I wonder if it will be as good as I remember????

Just started "Girl With a Pearl Earring" by Tracy Chevalier...no clue about the book but this review caught my eye....."A vibrant, sumptuous novel....triumphant....a beautifully written tale that mirrors the elegance of the painting that inspired it"-The Wall Street Journal

Just sounded so wonderful...LOL

Tuesday's With Morrie
Presently drinking more H2O... The tears are making me dehydrated.

Next on the list... Big Fish. Have'nt seen the book yet, I actually thought it was just a movie but my friend says the book came first before the movie. Loved the movie and expecting the book to be much better.

I a great book that is the first three Dragonlance books all in one big book. It’s like 1,500 pages and weighs about 15 pounds. It also has notes from the author in the margins. Like a $50 book for $10.

Finished reading Murder One by James Patterson. It went along fine until I realized who the murderer was, then the book dragged on. It's in a series of 4 books based on 4 woman involved in solving murders.

Next, and now, I brought home David Baldacci's Split Second.

Probably 60 percent through "Between a Rock and a Hard Place." Had to buy it... knew I couldn't wait to get it at the library. So... did you know Aron Ralston met a couple girls as he headed into Blue John Canyon? They urged him to make a loop back to their vehicles where he said, nope, I have a trip planned and am gonna go on down this canyon.

He called them his "angels" that were there to make him think and try to get him to turn back. Well, we all know what happened.

However, also, he was to meet them at a party that same night. I guess if you're in canyon country, maybe a person better report someone missing, even if it *might* seem uncalled for or too soon........

I took a break from reading the Star Wars books and read "Flowers for Algernon" for the hundreth time. Now I have started the Harry Potter books. I'm a bit behind. I am thinking about starting the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick OBryan. Better known as the Master and Comander books

I'm reading "The Perfect Mile" by Neal Bascomb. It follows Roger Bannister and John Landy from the Helsinki Olympics in '52 through the breaking of the 4-minute mile and to their big "mile of the century" race in Vancouver. So far it's an excellent read....

Oh, crap! "Flowers for Algernon".....I HATED that play. It was my last play I did at the theater, the subject was good I guess, but our director burried that play. Hated to out on a down note like that.

I have to read a bunch of childrens books for my Children's Lit course at school. My Prof wants us to read something like 50-60 books total over the next 11 weeks. She joked "Anyone reading in the grocery line yet?"

I didn't even know there was a play. I know there are a couple of movies. One called Charly and one with the actual title. I think it would leave to much out to try and make it a play. Most of the book takes place in Chalie's thoughts that he writes in a diary.

You'd be surprise. Maybe it was just the way our director butchered it. We did all of the *thoughts* parts.

Not trying to poo-poo it. I'm sure the book is good.

He never answers that, even in interviews. When you finish you'll know if it happened or not, sorta. When I finished my first reaction was WTF did that mean. Then I thought it meant this and then that. I had remembered a few pages that I wanted to revisit and re read parts of the beginning when he discovers the different faith. From there I realized what it meant to me. There is a pretty good Q&A I can post that I found on the net.

I'd like to get the HP books on CD, for the car. I think it'd be good for Laurel, too. I had to chuckle when I read the total narration time for book 1: 8 hours, 17 minutes. Just long enough to get to the Tenn. side of the Smokies.

TB: I'm anxious for my kids to get old enough for me to read the Narnia tales to them. My daughter is a bit (3 in Nov) older than yours. My son is 5. I've thought about them listening to HP, but was afraid it would scare them too much. It may be that Emma is young enough that she won't get the scary stuff but Reece will. What's your experience with this stuff and widdle ones?

lyra - something like that. When you finish I can give you some pages to go back and read and you'll realize a theme you hadn't picked up on.

There are 6 required off of her list, one we have to find ourselves.

Each week, we have to turn in *card sets* (MLA standard), in which we *should be* shooting for a total of 15 points (the highest amount per card set). She gives points based on how many pages each books has. She only allows 10 titles per set. In order to get the max for one book (5 pts), it has to have around 600 pages in it.

Mind you, this is just about 1/10th of my grade. I have to do journals for all of the required readings, study guides on 3 chapters every week, read to children twice (on my own time), observe a person reading to children twice (on my own time), take a quiz every other week on the study guides/chapters and if I'm behind in points, I have to go to a *meet the author night* (on my own time), submit a bilography on some book, or something else I can't remember.

Oh, yea. If my title sets are not balanced across the age group, I loose points no matter how many books I've read.

My wife tld me that I sould drop the class, but I'll have none of that. I'm not going to let it run my life, so if I get a C in that class, I'll be real happy. I've got two other classes (Myth, Magic and Folk Religionand Physical Geography) that much more fun to be in (both Profs rule!) and I'll be dedicating my time those classes.

As Laurel is only 2, she has no fear. She loves the HP books (at least what she'll sit still for when I read) and the first 2 movies. When she was 18 months she'd grab a broom, straddle it and yell "vroom! vroom!" like she was flying. One thing to remember about these books: HAve you ever read the original Grimm's Fairy Tales? THose were for kids, and they're some kinda violent. Remember what happens to the wolf in "Little Red Riding Hood."
