How about yall?” 7:55:16 AM 1/31/02 too many books “Right now Painted House, John Grisham, and just finished the most current in the "left behind "series. Also knocked off a really good Daniel Boone biography, and one on the Wiley captivity (Jenny Wiley). Did all the Hairy Potter books as a dad-daughter thing with the 9 year old. Just realized I read too much so will shut up now.” 8:00:56 AM 1/31/02 “Hey Sandy, plan to start Cold Mountain before too long. Currently reading "Quartered Safe Out of Here", George MacDonald Fraser. It's about his WWII experiences in the British army in Burma. Pretty good so far. He was in a Scottish regiment, so all of his dialogue is written as a Scot would speak. Difficult to follow at times. One of their expressions is "fookin' Jap".” 8:14:24 AM 1/31/02 “and speaking of which...i'm reading *Unthinking Eurocentrism* and *Black British Cultural Studies*...skool, ya know!” 8:17:18 AM 1/31/02 “Have you read any of his Flashman Books?!! They are an absolute pisser!” 8:18:06 AM 1/31/02 “Skewl aside... I'm trying to find time to keep reading "Love in a Dead Language." by Lee Siegel. Its pretty amazing A back cover note from Penn and Teller sez "Siegel has done for sex in India what Melville did for whaling in New England."” 8:24:38 AM 1/31/02 “Flashman is great. I think I've read all of them, but the last one. Another good series that is similar to Flashy is the Sharpe series. Sharpe takes place during the Napoleonic era. The main difference is that Sharpe is the hero instead of the coward.” 8:34:56 AM 1/31/02 dayhiker “Although its a "girls book" I read Cold Mountain at my wife's request. You will really like it, set during the Civil War, good read.” 8:46:32 AM 1/31/02 “Tom Clancy, The Bear and the Dragon. Also, The Tahoe Sierra by Jeffery Schaffer, it is a guide book to a bunch of trails around these parts.” 9:10:10 AM 1/31/02 “Stephen King's "It". I've also recently read King's "TommyKnockers", "Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon".. and also Bill Bryson's "Walk in the Woods".” 9:16:42 AM 1/31/02 “My new issues of "FOREIGN AFFAIRS" and “THE INDEPENDENT REVIEW a journal of political economy”. Got to mix in some real world stuff with the fiction. I would feel like an idiot if I didn't at least try to inform myself of political and economic issues.” 9:18:02 AM 1/31/02 “Still working on Anne Karina (Tolstoy). Very good, very long read. I love to read and I wish I had more time for it.” 9:24:44 AM 1/31/02 “Just finished "Soldiers Of God" and am into "Blue Highways" by William Least Heat Moon.” 9:37:18 AM 1/31/02 sandy “I've been wanting to pick-up the John Adams book for awhile....let me know what your opinions are....i've avoided the book because I was concerned it may contain too many "historical" facts and what-not...I like a more fictional type of read.... Besides that....just finished Joan of Arc by Mark Twain....highly recommended!! I'm currently re-reading the Lord of Rings (into Fellowship now).. Hey mtnman....the "Left Behind" series is really cool...I started it but haven't advanced to far into it....it's on the list!” 9:37:20 AM 1/31/02 “Although its a "girls book" I read Cold Mountain at my wife's request. What makes it a "girls book"??? It was written by a man and it's about a man, and war, and killing, and.... It's a good book PERIOD. :)” 9:41:38 AM 1/31/02 mapper-stratusloop “Its a sensitive book mostly from the woman's perspective and her journey, kinda wierd in places, not that much war and killing, the guy leaves the war early on and in journeying to his only thought, "true love" (girl's book) But I agree its good, Don't want to give away the ending Stratusloop- Yeah I've been hooked on the "left Behind" books for a year. Just polished off "the Desecration" so I get a break until they put out number 9.” 9:48:04 AM 1/31/02 “I was urged to read the "Left Behind" series by a friend. Some friend! The authors have an agenda (but at least they don't try to hide this fact) and they seem pretty anti-Catholic. It really reminded me of a soap opera (and a poorly written one at that). I hope people that read it aren't taking this as a true account of "the last days".” 9:57:19 AM 1/31/02 “I'm reading through thebackpacker.com's threaded discussions. Quite fasinating really. I personally hate books. I think being a computer programmer and an internet junky has made me lose my patients for sitting and reading.” 10:08:51 AM 1/31/02 “I think everyone understands that it is biblically based fiction. Its not a bad read, fairly light. Not the best authors I've ever read but neither is Clive Cussler and I like his books. I just want to see Nicholi get toasted.” 10:09:43 AM 1/31/02 “You mean it's not true, mapper? Man, I figured that the world had already ended and that those of us here were all... STUCK IN HELL...AAAAH...AAAAH! (R.I.P. Sam Kinneson)” 11:11:51 AM 1/31/02 “Textbooks, textbooks and more textbooks O.......and a few textbooks. Did I mention textbooks :(” 11:20:45 AM 1/31/02 “just finished re-reading "Red Dragon" and "Silence of the Lambs" contemplating picking up "Hannibal" again... I still don't know if I liked it or not” 12:12:51 PM 1/31/02 “Currently in the Middle of Clancy's Debt of honor. Once I'm done there I plan on getting Hunt for Red October and reading the series all the way through. Other then that I like Clive Cussler and Robin Cook.” 12:28:36 PM 1/31/02 “Textbooks: This week students in my classes have been reading in: de Waal "Peace Making among the Primates" Wright, R. "The Moral Animal. Why we are the way we are: The new Science of Evolutionary Psychology." "Demonic Males: Apes and the Origins of Human Violence" Gilligan, J. "Violence: Reflections on a national epidemic" Fraiberg "The Magic Years: Understanding and Handling the Problems of Early Childhood." Wachtel"Treating Troubled Children and Their Families" "The Moral Animal Pscyhology, Wad and Tavris "Pschobabble and Biobunk"” 2:47:50 PM 1/31/02 “I put down Le Carré's 'The Constant Gardener' when I got too involved in 'Tournament of Shadows _ The Race for Empire in Central Asia'. I also re-read 'Lord of the Flies' in prep for my Language Arts class and am re-reading off and on Froissart's contemporary account of the Hundred Yreas War (in translation). I am also in the midst of 'Romeo and Juliet, also for Lang. Arts.” 3:08:30 PM 1/31/02 “Ped, Demonic Males: Apes and the Origins of Human Violence? How are your students enjoying my life story?” 3:09:26 PM 1/31/02 “LOL Kleetn... they haven't got to the chapter on the "Saimiri Sciureus" yet. Xenos Paradox: "All Kleetns are liars says Kurtius the Kleetn."” 3:16:55 PM 1/31/02 “Marathon_The ultimate Training Guide Ayn Rand- The Fountainhead CS Lewis-Prince Caspian(for fun)” 3:34:33 PM 1/31/02 “I am currently enjoying Snowshoe Routes: Washington. Who cares if I don't actually get out and snowshoe. sniff, sniff” 3:48:56 PM 1/31/02 “How are you, or are you, enjoying The Fountainhead, wsdavies? It may be my favorite book of all time.” 4:06:00 PM 1/31/02 “I am also reading Stephen King's "It". I just finished "The Talisman" by Stephen King/'That other Guy' - great book.” 4:30:30 PM 1/31/02 Deathmarch “Loved the books you're talkin. Clancy is a great writer. Debt of honor is good, It'll worry you. So will Sum of All Fears, terrorist with a nuke. If you like Clancy and Dirk Pit try some Nelson Demill (the guy who wrote General's Daughter)” 4:49:09 PM 1/31/02 Ayn Rand? Architecture? “ ![]() You'll like this one, arc. A glimpse into alternate universes where Ayn Rand's books are all 400 pages shorter.” 5:19:33 PM 1/31/02 “Blahcool - What did you think of Talisman? Do you plan on reading the sequel, Black House. (the other guy is Peter Straub)” 5:24:26 PM 1/31/02 “"The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" by Edmund Morris. Talk about someone who liked to walk in the wild . . . Great book and the sequil, "Theodore Rex" is supposed to be even better - my next read.” 5:25:37 PM 1/31/02 “Dickens' Tale of Two Cities, Brooks' The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, and lots and lots of free porn” 5:27:37 PM 1/31/02 “Anybody ever read Democracy in America. Now that was a page turner.” 5:37:45 PM 1/31/02 “It's enjoyable...I read Atlas Shrugged a couple years back and really enjoyed it...Every once in a while when I'm reading an article about California Politics(the energy crisis) I think about Rand and how prophetic some of her stuff has become..Kinda scary...” 5:52:45 PM 1/31/02 “I've read The Fountainhead, and want to read Atlas Shrugged. An interesting study on the purity of purpose in a world of schemes. Right now I have on my nighttable: Several issues of Backpacking, several issues of Fast Company, an issue of Harvard Business Review, Business 2.0 by Bill Jensen, The Middle East: A Brief History of the Last 2,000 Years by Bernard Lewis and River Horse, by William Least Heat Moon. I pick up which ever strikes my mood at the time. I think I have read all of the Clancy books. Executive Orders was amazingly prophetic of the 9-11 attacks. I like Clancy but get a little tired of his perfect/near perfect characters. I have had a little too much reality lately. I think I'm ready for some escapism.” 6:13:32 PM 1/31/02 current read “"A history of Southern Utah and Its National Parks" Next Read "Willian Howard Taft" Last read: Blood and Gold, Anne Rice and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Every February (for the past 23 years)...The Hobbit and The Rings Trilogy.” 7:48:33 PM 1/31/02 “Atlas Shrugged...I hope it picks up” 9:25:18 PM 1/31/02 Must skip a generation “My dad reads almost constantly and has a huge library. I really have a hard time with it....10 pages and I'm asleep ;)” 9:43:01 PM 1/31/02 “Stick with it Biz...it's the type of book that needs to be read a bit everyday...you'll be glad you did..I hope” 10:10:25 PM 1/31/02 “Good Reasons, the new textbook I'm using with my College Composition II (argumentation) students. Never forget that the teacher has to read the books, too. Of seven issue-oriented subjects covered in the "readings" section, we're doing four -- environment, the body, controlled substances, and censorship. Should I tell the kids about the sublime level of discourse on TT so they can use it as a model of persuasive style?” 10:21:53 PM 1/31/02 “Ray Jardine:beyond backpacking its pretty cool.Got loads of info, tips on liteweight gear etc. and how to make yer own...” 11:10:08 PM 1/31/02 “Ayn Rand was a pop philosopher. Her ideas are trite and self-serving, and her books are mere testimonts to her own baseless arrogance. Better to read free porn.” 11:48:51 PM 1/31/02 “right now i'm reading trail talk. boy gave me theodore rex for christmas. i got to the second chapter then school started again and put it on hold. current readings are: delivering results - dave ulrich human resource champions - dave ulrich managing transitions - william bridges applied industrial/organizational psychology - michael aamodt hope to get back to theodore rex by the end of april.” 12:03:29 AM 2/01/02 “I got bored reading Atlas shrugged... same with Fountainhead. The worst though was the movie... Ayn Rand could be pretty sharp witted and funny sometimes though and she did get a lot of people thinking.” 7:43:43 AM 2/01/02 “Kleetn, I'll bet you've enjoyed reading all the Cliff's Notes condensed classics, between comics, of course. I get it now, Haiku, condensed poetry. Sounds like you and Mr. Chips missed the point. I concur, ped. You may not agree with everything about her philosophies, but they do get you thinking, unless your brain has too much condensation. I found Atlas Shrugged to be slow reading, but there are some bright spots where she really explains her philosophy well. The Fountainhead describes her ideas for the ideal man, Atlas Shrugged describes her ideas for ideal society. Some of her stuff is prophetic and kinda scary, I agree ws. Some of the people she describes really exist too. They ridicule what they can't comprehend, while believing that we're all responsible for each other's feelings. Talk about out of control...” 8:45:16 AM 2/01/02 your mind! eewww.... “Ayn Rand made me want to put myself out of my misery. i just finished reading *Lord of the Flies* for the first time...NOW i get what that Simpsons episode was about! tehe!” 8:58:48 AM 2/01/02 Jump to Page |  1 | 2
