when you pitch those tents to seal them,do you wait for rain to find where the leaks are?i'm using the logic i've been studying.

Got my new Osprey Aether 60 today! It's a great (and light) 3900ci internal frame.

Just one drawback. My 20F bag won't fit in the base like it will in the other two packs I have. The damn thing is narrow at the bottom!

The 0F bag fits no prob though, and since I was gonna use this as my winter pack, well, I guess it don't matter. I'll still be using the my old North Face Inca when I want carry a lot of gear.

I suppose I could fix the problem by getting a down 20F bag that would stuff smaller...

mmmmmm.....gear......

Its always fun to buy more gear!

Or just get a granite gear compression sack!

They work great for me!

I ended up cramming my 20F bag in the stuff sack for my 0F bag. That helped a lot. I was able to get the thing deep enough and sorta turned sideways so that there's plenty of room in the pack now.

But boy, 3900ci is lot less than I thought it was. It'll make me pack lighter.

We were at Costco yesterday. has anyone seen the Ridgeway by Kelty 'Alpine' internal frame pack for $65.99... 3,935 Cubic Inches and weighs 4 Lbs. ? Picked one up to replace my son's external frame pack. It only fits torsos up to 23" though.

Top half of the top pocket zips off and converts to a fanny pack.

Also has a front slab pocket that disconnects for use as a day pack and accommodates a hydration bladder.

If you leave these two items at home ...the pack only weighs 3 Lbs and some change!

My son is excited about it and it fits him well!

On the last Michigan Mountaineers hike LeSubtil showed some of his food he gets from Inertia Foods and I was very impressed. I went to the site when I got home and read and read and read. When it was all said and done I had ordered 14 meals for an upcoming four day trip. Here’s some highlights of their food:

---The nutrition of most meals is right around 400-500 cals, 9-27 gr. Protein, and between 45-87 gr. Carbs, and they have good fats too.
---They come dehydrated AND shrink wrapped. The meals are small in the pack.
---They are packaged in a zip pouch that can be used to cook some of the meals and as a bowl.
---They only weigh between 3.5-5 oz.
---They only cost about $3.25.
---They have energy bars with 410 cals, 19 gr. Fat, 53 gr. Carbs, 8 gr. Protein, and they only cost $1.25.
---They ship for free!

I plan on doing a full review after my trip and after trying all the meals.

I WANT!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Marmot
"Womens Alpinist Climbing
Jacket"
This is the professional climber's favorite. The Climbing III won the American Alpine Institute's Guide's Choice Award, naming it on of the best technical climbing jackets on the market. It's a tough, mid-weight shell built in 3 Layer fabric with reinforcement in high-abrasion areas. Myriad pockets are placed high for easy access with a pack. Marmot's new Climbing Jacket uses 3L XCR Goretex for a lighter weight and more breathable barrier. The women's is sized specifically to fit the female form.

Can't find it anywhere. Dangit! Also, it is about $450!

Happy Birthday From Campmor
Made my birthday order today:

Design Salt Silk Travel Blanket/Bag Liner
8'x10' SilNylon Tarp
Kelty Nobendium Stakes
Esbit Stove

These all go along with the GVP G4 that should be arriving soon. I think I've used up my gear allowance for the year - but I can't imagine that I'll ever need anything else. Well, there is that .85 liter titanium kettle that would work great with the Esbit. hehe

HPM will be reading from the book of Tyvek, chapter 3 verses 13-15.

I did finally score a chunk of Tyvek. It's not big enough to use as a ground cloth or a tarp for that matter, I'll figure out something to do with it. Is Tyvek comparable in weight to sil-nylon? Tyvek does seem more durable.

With the above purchases I *should* be able to pack pretty light - we'll see how it goes. I'll be fine ss long as I hike with someone who has a 2-person tent, nice warm bag, lots of food and decent clothes to spare.

I'll practice pitching the tarp in the backyard and make sure that the first few times out I have a redundant shelter or am close enough to the car to bail if I need to.

Construction and finish is excellent ($$$). I'm surprised at the weight and how much food it'll hold. Can't wait to use it.

don't hang a bear canister - if you tie anything to it it just gives the bear a handle to drag it off to who knows where - the bear "playing footsie" with the canister is no big deal and will most likely not happen at all if the bear has had any experience with bear canisters before. Just don't put it somewhere like the edge of a cliff or steep slope - try to find a hollow or depressed area for the canister that way the bear canister won't be far from where you left it.

larceny in my heart....
There's a big building going up near my office.

They are using many, many square yards of Tyvek to cover this structure.

The wind has been very around here as of late.

Some of the Tyvek is coming off. With a little bit of help....

I too have found myself lurking around the dumpster of more than one empty construction site. They're pretty stingy with the Tyvek.

Also ordered a bunch of stuff from Inertia Foods per the recommendation of a few hikers here. Same price as a lunch at work and I can test them out at the office (can I light an Esbit stove at my desk boss?).
