“I have a 2 3/4 year old 65 lb Siberian Husky, we were at war when I frist got him. He tried his best to drive my insane, but since I had already been married, there wasn't much sanity left. I worked with him every day and now I am his devoted human...I come when he sits by the door, I walk him when he brings me his leash, I feed him when he brings me his bowl...wait a minute, something is wrong with this picture...good grief...I've been domesticated, he accomplished something my wife could never do...I've been house trained!!!! oy vey.

Seriously...he is my best friend and is a great companion...he's my buppie. It wasn't easy, and he is still under training, my friends think Im mean, I'm not mean, just strict and tough, but he is the best and will be the greatest dog...especially on the trail.”

Hang in there for another couple mos, the pooch will come around. Also, buy lots of chewy toys, rawhides and bones dipped in gravy. They seem expensive until you compare them to the cost of your gear...

If this doesn't work, take him to a dog psychologist, your pooch may have some latent repressed desires that he feels can only be exercised by chewing up your house. A doggie shrink might be able to fix that.”

Dogs generally want to know how to get along, you need to be patient with them while they learn. Having a puppy requires a big investment in time.

I hope someone learns from Prowler's mistake.

Prowler: I did not claim to know how you treat your kids. I was reasonably careful in my wording. I said that "the responsibility that people show with their dogs usually says something about how much responsibility they show with their kids." I stand by that. I'm sure there are lots of exceptions. I am ready to take your word for it that you are an exception. I've done work with the Department of Social Services evaluating foster parents and looking at abusive and neglectful parents and I really do see a connection between the two. I've also heard other people demonstrate a clear link.

On the face of it, getting a dog (especially a big dog) is a committment... and getting one when you don't have 15 minutes a day to train it is irresponsible (no conditional words like "often" or "usually" here). Preferring TT over training your dog is irresponsible. It sounds like your puppy has become more ill mannered and is also now older and will be harder to place (and more likely to be rejected by its new owner).

As someone who trained and raised a dog when I had a big commute and big profeessional responsibilites, it irritates me that someone wouldn't take the committment more seriously from the outset. When my dog got sick and the vet said he couldn't do anything for her and that I should consider euthanasia, I took her home and nursed her round the clock until she recovered. Where did the time come from? I slept less until it was done.

I did this for two reasons: 1) I felt a responsible to the dog I had taken home, 2)it was important for me to show my kids when we took someone into our household, that we would take good care of them.

Prowler: I am not trying to condemn or insult you by saying that you were irresponsible. We all do irresponsible things... at least I have and probably will again.

Amy. Its too late to scold me know. You had your chance to demonstrate responsible ped ownership by providing the structure, time, guidance and discipline needed... but now I have grown unruly and ill mannered and it is all your fault.”

“I'm sure there is a rescue society nearby specifically for St.Bernards. Prior to getting Buddur, I was in contact with GRIN (Golden Retrievers In Need) who find homes for displaced Golden Retrievers. I'm sure if you do some looking, you'll find a similar one for your big'ole tub of trouble.”

“How about using a cage to put him in when he is alone until he gets out of his chewing stage. I know several people that have done this and it is the recommended way to deal with this problem. Put him in there with his toys. Also get him one of those hardened bones, it is a natural bone heat dried and lasts forever, I know someone that has had one for 5 years with a large breed dog.

Beating the dog does nothing but make him afraid of you. I am not saying not to give him a swat now and again. Once you have the cage when you catch him chewing put him in it...and that's put him in it, not throw him in it.

You clam to be a good father and I do not dispute that so use that experience training the dog. I use the theory that dogs are like 2 year olds, they are good most of the time but sometimes...

I live in NKY and will start checking around, I might know someone that will take the dog if you can't make it work. I have two and that is plenty for me.”

I always wanted a big dog for solo hiking you no, i get lonely and a dog doesnt talk to much!

Buddy I have two kids 2yrs., and 8 month old, and have allready been broken in on the Back country!

I dont no of any places to train around here well I could find one!

Deal Ill call now and schedule. If I can spend $60 bucks a month to feed him then I can train him.

Dont forget I have also another dog Georman Shepard / Wolf which is the best dog in the would!"

I have beet him when he tore up the whole house, he tore everything down from the frig then shreddied it.

Apple what! I gave him some of those really strong Listerine Paper Mints(he liked it!!)

Then I gave him some of that sower drops i cannot even open my mouth trying it and (he liked it)

Im getting a Barrel made for his neck that says (IM FREINDLY) that may work to keep the neighbors calmed when he comes up."

Scullcap. This past weekend I gave Cliff hs tail and I never laughed so hard in my life. Imagine that big old dogg diving after his tail trying to cach it. This does keep him of others for about 1 hr. Its halarious!"

PR* If you think your so shure, then why do I have another great dog 3 years old! Pedxing, "well Ill guess you have two kids, ah so you treat your first like the trained well behaved dog. And the second born is like the second dog which you can not train because it you dont take fifteen minutes a day with him"!

What do you think beating your dog after the fact teaches him? huh? It certainly doesn't teach him to stop trashing your home, the most it teaches him is to watch out for you when you are coming at him. What a bully.

What did you watch the movie Beethoven and decide thats the kind of dog I want?

Why don't you do something right for a change and call the St. Bernard rescue in your area and let them find you a real good home for your dog, a place where he can be loved and trained appropriately. If you can't locate them in the yellow pages then call the local ASPCA they can get ahold of them for you.

Just remember aggression breeds aggression not just in pets but in children too. I hope that you don't mistreat your pet in front of them, if so I wonder what they think of you? Worse yet I wonder how they will deal with adversity when they are older......with an iron fist?

If you find it necessary to hit your dog senseless, you should not have one. Dogs are wonderful animals and can be amazing teachers for you and your children, but I am just praying that somehow old Cliffy finds a better home. Please do the right thing.”

We're beyond putty here. All I can do is try and hide it with stain coloring and hope she loves the dog too much to get rid of her when she does find it. Of course all this is moot because she'll get rid of ME when she finds it.”

“I'm talking about using this stuff like bondo, not just filling in a few scratches. I had to do the same thing for a teething puupy, who whittled a 3" leg down to 2", a section about 4" wide. I used hardening wood filler, then colored putty on top.”
