He tried his best to drive my insane, but since I had already been married, there wasn't much sanity left. I worked with him every day and now I am his devoted human...I come when he sits by the door, I walk him when he brings me his leash, I feed him when he brings me his bowl...wait a minute, something is wrong with this picture...good grief...I've been domesticated, he accomplished something my wife could never do...I've been house trained!!!! oy vey. Seriously...he is my best friend and is a great companion...he's my buppie. It wasn't easy, and he is still under training, my friends think Im mean, I'm not mean, just strict and tough, but he is the best and will be the greatest dog...especially on the trail.” 10:03:15 PM 1/07/02 oh yeah “Anyone going on the Ozark ECT will get to meet him, his name is "Khatru...Heart of the Sunrise", but everyone calls him Khatru.” 10:05:39 PM 1/07/02 “Where do you live I might want that dog? Crazy Mike” 10:06:19 PM 1/07/02 “Cincy! Ill share him the wife said.” 10:12:11 PM 1/07/02 “Thats not far from me I live in Northwest Indiana. How long do I have to think about this? Crazy Mike” 10:14:40 PM 1/07/02 “?? sharing thow!” 10:16:40 PM 1/07/02 “Oh ok when do we start? Crazy Mike” 10:17:33 PM 1/07/02 “How would you want to share from this dat e to this dat efor example! He eats about 40lbs.week! so you feed him when you have him and ill feed him when i have him.” 10:20:25 PM 1/07/02 “Get a crate and put all your stuff in it. Prowler, you want somebody to train your dog AND feed it? Admit it. He is too much for you right now. Give him to a loving home and know you've done him the biggest favor you could.” 4:25:12 PM 1/08/02 “Thats nutz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crazy Mike” 4:38:45 PM 1/08/02 “Crazy Mike!! We have decided to let you have Cliff our dog,if still interested, hes just to much right know and needs someone to luv him more! If you want him email me!!” 10:12:06 AM 1/15/02 “Crazy Mike , you there!” 9:00:07 PM 1/15/02 Remember The Children's Book Clifford The 12ft-Dog “Someday Clifford will make you very happy...and you'll be glad you kept him.” 9:05:37 PM 1/15/02 “All my stress comes from this dog ! Beacuse I dont have time, ok i admit it I DONT HAVE TIME! Does any one want this dog Im desperate. Crazy Mike, iluvbackpacking.com” 9:08:59 PM 1/15/02 “I am so lucky my dog takes after me--highly intelligent. He kicked the chewing up the house habit early (by 1 yr.) Hang in there for another couple mos, the pooch will come around. Also, buy lots of chewy toys, rawhides and bones dipped in gravy. They seem expensive until you compare them to the cost of your gear... If this doesn't work, take him to a dog psychologist, your pooch may have some latent repressed desires that he feels can only be exercised by chewing up your house. A doggie shrink might be able to fix that.” 9:09:02 PM 1/15/02 “we still dont have time for him!” 9:11:23 PM 1/15/02 “Exactly how many chew toys did you buy? ZERO? I thought so, get off the damn computer and go to the store. 'I don't have time' is a lame excuse when it's obvious you spend all day on TT” 9:15:49 PM 1/15/02 “Your Dog Needs You More Than We Do heh heh I'm just jerking your chain Prowler... but you have to admit I do have a good point.” 9:16:58 PM 1/15/02 “Ii went and bought him about ten new toys! and the only thing that got chewed up is my sons mattress corner!” 9:23:08 PM 1/15/02 “Biz i run the show at work ! i DO NOT have time! I schedule work for 9 citys! and the only time I get on TT is when I get home!” 9:25:49 PM 1/15/02 “Biz does have a point. So did Buddur and Amy. You should not take home a puppy unless you are really prepared for the responsibility. And if you have time to post, let alone time to go out on the trail, you have time to do some training with your dog. Dogs generally want to know how to get along, you need to be patient with them while they learn. Having a puppy requires a big investment in time. I hope someone learns from Prowler's mistake. The scary thing is, the responsibility that people show with their dogs usually says something about how much responsibility they show with their kids. Love, structure, time and guidance take time... they can leave you exhausted, but in the end they are usually the effort is returned many fold.” 9:29:37 PM 1/15/02 “pedxing , You really pissed me off know!!!!!! how I treat, train, or disciplin my dog has NOTHING to do with kids!! I treat my kids great! and for you to even make a comment like that is rude! YES, we made a mistake on getting a GIANTpuppy but thats why Im trying to find him a good home! and I know the dog loves hiking so here I am looking for a good hiking partner for Cliff! So leave the structure bull#&%!$ at home when you say some thing about raising my dam kids, I can raise my dam kids just find, nothing in this post says anything about that subject! So go to HELL!” 9:35:45 PM 1/15/02 “oooh, now ya done it, Ped! bad Ped, baaaaad!” 10:02:32 PM 1/15/02 “Ooops I just saw this. Prowler: I did not claim to know how you treat your kids. I was reasonably careful in my wording. I said that "the responsibility that people show with their dogs usually says something about how much responsibility they show with their kids." I stand by that. I'm sure there are lots of exceptions. I am ready to take your word for it that you are an exception. I've done work with the Department of Social Services evaluating foster parents and looking at abusive and neglectful parents and I really do see a connection between the two. I've also heard other people demonstrate a clear link. On the face of it, getting a dog (especially a big dog) is a committment... and getting one when you don't have 15 minutes a day to train it is irresponsible (no conditional words like "often" or "usually" here). Preferring TT over training your dog is irresponsible. It sounds like your puppy has become more ill mannered and is also now older and will be harder to place (and more likely to be rejected by its new owner). As someone who trained and raised a dog when I had a big commute and big profeessional responsibilites, it irritates me that someone wouldn't take the committment more seriously from the outset. When my dog got sick and the vet said he couldn't do anything for her and that I should consider euthanasia, I took her home and nursed her round the clock until she recovered. Where did the time come from? I slept less until it was done. I did this for two reasons: 1) I felt a responsible to the dog I had taken home, 2)it was important for me to show my kids when we took someone into our household, that we would take good care of them. Prowler: I am not trying to condemn or insult you by saying that you were irresponsible. We all do irresponsible things... at least I have and probably will again. Amy. Its too late to scold me know. You had your chance to demonstrate responsible ped ownership by providing the structure, time, guidance and discipline needed... but now I have grown unruly and ill mannered and it is all your fault.” 11:21:49 AM 1/18/02 “To summarize: I believe there is a relationship between the two things (treatment of dogs and treatment of kids)with most people. I accept Prowler's statement that there is no relationship in his case. As for his telling me to "go to hell," he oughta post directions, or at least a link to a topo map.” 11:48:11 AM 1/18/02 “So quick to jump on the defensive, what passion I guess. Do what I mentioned earlier and give that dog up for adoption! Ok!!!! Quit your moanin and get on with your life and raising your family!” 12:28:39 PM 1/18/02 If Your SURE, And Don't Want To Reconsider... “I'm sure there is a rescue society nearby specifically for St.Bernards. Prior to getting Buddur, I was in contact with GRIN (Golden Retrievers In Need) who find homes for displaced Golden Retrievers. I'm sure if you do some looking, you'll find a similar one for your big'ole tub of trouble.” 3:28:39 PM 1/18/02 “How about using a cage to put him in when he is alone until he gets out of his chewing stage. I know several people that have done this and it is the recommended way to deal with this problem. Put him in there with his toys. Also get him one of those hardened bones, it is a natural bone heat dried and lasts forever, I know someone that has had one for 5 years with a large breed dog. Beating the dog does nothing but make him afraid of you. I am not saying not to give him a swat now and again. Once you have the cage when you catch him chewing put him in it...and that's put him in it, not throw him in it. You clam to be a good father and I do not dispute that so use that experience training the dog. I use the theory that dogs are like 2 year olds, they are good most of the time but sometimes... I live in NKY and will start checking around, I might know someone that will take the dog if you can't make it work. I have two and that is plenty for me.” 8:11:08 PM 1/19/02 Original Post “1Post:Pedxing Dog For Free "I have a 135 lb. 8 mon. old Baby St. Bernard thats only good in the woods. PR* If you think your so shure, then why do I have another great dog 3 years old! Pedxing, "well Ill guess you have two kids, ah so you treat your first like the trained well behaved dog. TTer's: sorry for the inconveniance to any that read and take affence only ment to defend my RESPOSIBILTIES towards MY KIDS!!” 9:51:34 PM 1/19/02 “and to FIND a good home for a good dog! oops I never said he was good!” 9:53:02 PM 1/19/02 “I repeat - I hope the poor dog finds a loving home SOON!!!” 11:42:26 PM 1/19/02 “"and to FIND a good home for a good dog! Pepper can you read!” 9:26:47 AM 1/20/02 “Prowler why don't you contact a st Bernard rescue? They'll work with the dog and find him a home with a family that speciffically wants a Bernard. You could be rid of him in days.” 1:27:59 PM 1/20/02 “"I havce beet him when he tore up the whole house, he tore everything down from the frig then shreddied it." For a moment I thought we were dealing with Ice Tea.....with all that poor spelling. I realize after reading all these posts that you are just stupid! What do you think beating your dog after the fact teaches him? huh? It certainly doesn't teach him to stop trashing your home, the most it teaches him is to watch out for you when you are coming at him. What a bully. What did you watch the movie Beethoven and decide thats the kind of dog I want? Why don't you do something right for a change and call the St. Bernard rescue in your area and let them find you a real good home for your dog, a place where he can be loved and trained appropriately. If you can't locate them in the yellow pages then call the local ASPCA they can get ahold of them for you. Just remember aggression breeds aggression not just in pets but in children too. I hope that you don't mistreat your pet in front of them, if so I wonder what they think of you? Worse yet I wonder how they will deal with adversity when they are older......with an iron fist? I don't have enough time is just a cop out, nothing more.” 2:09:18 PM 1/20/02 while on the subject “i know someone who is moving and has to get rid of their husky/golden retreiver it's 2 yrs old, and fully housetrained. don't know much else. oh yea its a male” 5:45:32 PM 1/20/02 while on the subject “i know someone who is moving and has to get rid of their husky/golden retreiver it's 2 yrs old, and fully housetrained. don't know much else. oh yea its a male” 5:45:57 PM 1/20/02 “Good luck to you Prowler. I hope the leads offered by people like Buddur prove helpful. You are doing the right thing now. I have to respect that.” 5:47:44 PM 1/20/02 “Well Prowler, I don't know if you are simply uneducated or just one of the dumbest SOB's I have ever heard of. You are actually looking for someone to share your dog? Are you kidding me? You accepted a large responsibility when you acquired that dog, now live up to it! If you can't handle that dog for whatever reason(which I'm sure is BS) then contact a rescue org. and let them handle the situation. You obviously made a big mistake, but nobody in this world is going share your dog with you every other weekend. I completely agree with sirpeteofmillwork in that "aggression breeds aggression" and there is definitely no reason to beat your dog. If you find it necessary to hit your dog senseless, you should not have one. Dogs are wonderful animals and can be amazing teachers for you and your children, but I am just praying that somehow old Cliffy finds a better home. Please do the right thing.” 9:21:42 AM 1/25/02 “In Prowler's defense: 1) He does not bight 2) He did decide to give his dog away (not "share it")” 11:45:57 AM 1/25/02 “for some reason the thread was near the top this morning...but then it went away again...i know i'm not that drunk..maybe” 2:08:50 AM 9/11/03 “Join the club dude! My 4 month old Golden chewed a hole in my (READ: The Wife's) loveseat. The wife said one more time and she's gone. So you can imagine my dismay when I found one of the wooden legs on the futon chewed down. Oh shlt! I'm going to sand it a little and try to stain it so she might not notice it until she is completely bonded with the pup. BTW- I ordered Honey's shock coler yesterday.” 7:46:36 AM 9/11/03 “Try finding the samr color wood putty and use that. It works really well.” 8:16:56 AM 9/11/03 “Call FurnitureMedic! I can put you on the National Account program. ;-)” 8:21:16 AM 9/11/03 “"Try finding the samr color wood putty and use that. It works really well." We're beyond putty here. All I can do is try and hide it with stain coloring and hope she loves the dog too much to get rid of her when she does find it. Of course all this is moot because she'll get rid of ME when she finds it.” 8:23:59 AM 9/11/03 “I'm talking about using this stuff like bondo, not just filling in a few scratches. I had to do the same thing for a teething puupy, who whittled a 3" leg down to 2", a section about 4" wide. I used hardening wood filler, then colored putty on top.” 8:26:35 AM 9/11/03 “*confused*...i've got to stop drinking...you guys must be f'ing with me” 9:39:53 AM 9/11/03 “Nigal, are you crate training this pup? I've been doing quite a bit of training over the last year email me if ya need some help.” 12:43:22 PM 9/11/03 “I just found a bumper sticker that reads "Train Don't Complain." I need that one.” 12:47:39 PM 9/11/03 “Yeah, I'm cage training here with great sucsess. I have trained one very wild Lab with a training coler and it was unbelieveable how well it works. I'm also wanting to use the coler for training while hiking.” 2:26:43 PM 9/11/03 “They tryed crateing with me but it did not work....8)” 6:48:09 PM 9/11/03
