Son Volt is great. Also check out Uncle Tupelo (which is the band credited with starting "alt country" and who's demise spawned Son Volt) and Whiskeytown.

alt.country
Hey Bongofreek...good call. The Tupes are the #&%!$. Although, out of Uncle Tupelo came Son Volt (Jay Farrar) and Wilco (Jeff Tweedy). If I had to name a favorite band right now, its Wilco hands down. Their last 2 albums have been awesome, and their new one is sitting at home in a forced "time-out" from the rotation so I dont get sick of it. Its not officially released until April 23rd, but its been out on the net for awhile. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, get it and you wont be dissapointed.
Whiskeytown is in that same genre - they're broken up now. They were fronted by Ryan Adams, who is doing pretty well solo for now. He's not bad, I like to think of him as the Dave Matthews of alt.country, which isn't exactly a compliment in my book. He's got some really good songs though. Other good alt.country groups I've gotten into...The Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Richard Buckner...
