Chilkoot Trail

“Anyone in this goup backpacked this trail in Alaska/Canada? If you have, what is your opinion of the trail? Is it hard to get permits? Best time to go? Length of time to allow? Best Brandy to take? Etc... Etc... Etc...”

“Klondike! I am interested in this one too. I remember some articles in Boy Scout magazines about troops that have done the hike. It is still riddled with stuff that was discarded by the early miners on their way up.

“As I mentioned on another thread, I've done the Chilkoot. But because Rat's ass and bacpac would only insult me for posting my knowledge of it, I won't even give you the time of day.”

I understand the gold miners carried 100 lb. packs up the trail in stages so they could get all their gear and supplies up. The Canadian government wouldn't let them enter unless they were well supplied. Unbelievable what they did trying to get rich quick.”

“At one point, I had listed a ton of links to it. Just do a search for "Chilkoot Trail" There are both U.S. and Canadian parks and permits etc. that you'll need to deal with.

“We're kinda sorts looking at doing this trail in 2013. There's lots of cool videos of people's trips on youtube, vimeo and such.”

“It's all about day three....Sheep Camp to Happy Camp is rough. Day three takes about 8-12 hrs depending on your shape. It's only 8 miles and about 2500 feet elevation gain but the Golden Staircase is a scary 1200 foot steep boulder climb. All the kids I saw on the trail seemed to handle it with ease. “Cool, thanks. Yeah, that slog up from Sheep to Happy camp looks, uh, interesting. ;P I was concerned about it, but then I compared to a good hike I had in Ireland many moons ago and it's actually comparable, just lower elevation.”
