Hey Joy - The weather report this morning said that upper lower Michigan will be experiencing blizzard like conditions! This same cell came outta Grand Forks area yesterday, where it dumped up to 1 foot of snow in places.

Are we crazy or what?!?!?!

Hmmm, maybe we should take the jeep instead of the wagon. Are you serious, we could get that much snow? You're trying to get us all scared so we don't show up and you can keep all the beer for yourself aren't ya Laqtis?

Okay, gojo, what do have in mind? What wonders of the Big Sky country to you want to see first? You didn't really get to see any super good parts this summer. Me and Aero know about some cool Huterite colonies we could check out!

RE: What are you doing this weekend??
This weekend i am NOT doing a three day backpack in the adirondaks as I had planned.

Seem to have a case of achilles tendonitis. Will have it checked out by Sport medicine doc on Nov 6.

Hope to do the ADK hike in mid November, depending on what he says (and how it feels of course).

Could turn into a winter hike . . .but I got new snowshoes on the way!!

RE: What are you doing this weekend??
I finally found something to do this weekend! Gale Norton, the Secretary of Interior is going to speak in Billings this morning. Anything you want me to pass on? Ban snowmobiles in national parks, don't drill ANWR, keep the Missouri Breaks National monument designation intact? Anything? She'll probably tout Interior's latest achievement; the re-introduction of the Buddha Bear to Trail talk (they put a radio collar on him and pulled one of his teeth)

Hosting a party for my partner Amy, who just climbed Ama Dablam in the Himalayas, then late Sat night going to Lassen for an overnight training with SAR...we send out teams of three to locate a spot on a map, then make them bivy there...oh yea, we take one pack from each team before they leave so they have to make do with survival gear for two, with three people.....some folks won't sleep at all, at least they will have the meteor showers to watch...if it doesn?t snow.

Goin hiking for 3 days...

Joining up with a small group to do a part of the High Country Pathway in the Northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

It's going to be a test of sorts, a challenge against (IMO) the most dangerous type of weather. It's expected to hover around freezing all weekend, with rain, snow, sleet, and fog. I've taken a lot of time deciding what clothes to wear. I won't be going light this time!

The second part of the challenge will be for each of us to attempt to build a fire . It's been raining and/or snowing all week up there and everything should be soaked. I want to see if I can build a fire in the rain and wind without fire starters. I practice this somewhat often at home in the backyard firepit, and also in the woodstove, so I'm looking to win this one. My goal is to do a one match fire with scrounged wet firewood.

I hope everyone else gets to have some fun also. See ya in the bush!

I HATE TECHOLOGY!
I was gonna do a dayhike on San Gorgonio... go play in the snow... but my damn car decided to show me a cryptic light that indicates my engine need service soon... even though I just had it serviced last weekend... My car is becoming a diva (and it's not American!)

Alot of times, at least in Fords, the engine light indicates an emision problem. Hopefully it's that simple for you!

Birthday party on Saturday and Sunday a nice long walk with Abby, Smiley Girl and Tarabull. A nice quiet weekend compared to the last few and the one to come next week!

le Subtil- sounds like a great idea. That is a tricky tempurature. If it's already cold and snowing you naturally go more prepared, but when it's in-between you forget stuff. There's nothing harder than building a fire when you're wet and shivering.

I was going to flood our backyard ice rink this weekend, but it's going to be 45 degrees. Hockey night in Montana is going to be postponed!

I doubt that I will get anywhere near the trail this weekend. I need the entire weekend to prepare for a meeting in Washington next week. It is looking bleak for me to do any hiking until after the first of the year. I don't know if I can make it that long without bp'ing.

A Horrible Weekend Planned
I-am-Om, a friend, and I are going to Crystal River to kayak and commune with the manatees, an endangered species. It's supposed to be 75 degrees with sunny skies. Horrible weather, just horrible I say. Oh God, when will winter get here?

I was hoping to get out and do a bit of skiing, but the visability up there is nil, right now. Lots of new snow.

December just gets so busy, with family stuff and all the running around. It's tough to get out and play. Where did this year go?

Heading up to Vail tonight, boating on the Colorado tomorrow. Forecast is for lots of snow, so we'll see how winter kayaking treats me. The fear factor will hopefully keep the cold at bay til we take out. Saturday night my buddy that works at Vail as a groomer is taking us up on his snowcat/groomer for some full moon turns, should be pretty sweet. Maybe a little snowshoe Sunday morning, and then head back to beat the nasty I-70 traffic. Is it whitewater on the Crystal arclite? If so I need to move wherever that is I think. The southeast is already tempting me with their year-round paddling that isnt quite as hardcore as this 25 degrees and snowing madness. Have a good weekend...

Vail sounds cool to, fenway. I was on the National Ski Patrol many moons ago. Now I can visit the white stuff without having to live in it. No whitewater here I'm afraid. The nearest whitewater is about six hours north. The flatwater paddling here is outrageous though. We have spring runs, rivers, lakes, and two coasts. The coastal barrier islands in the Gulf are absolutely beautiful. Makes you think you're shipwrecked in the South Pacific.

Same to you fenway, and to everyone else.

Lesubtil, I thought I'd pass on a few hints for a one match wet weather fire...

Take a small branch thats dry (from a dead/standing tree) and cut away from yourself starting at the far end moving towards your body. Try to make cuts that will make long thin shavings layered like shingles sort of. These burn really well. Also Birch trees tend to rot from the inside out. Many times its possible to find downed birches that are nearly hollow. Since birches have lots of natural oil in the wood and bark a hollow birch log is an ideal place to start.

Have a blast,and stay warm!

I was supposed to kayak (on a lake) today. It was a great day for it but I ended up in the sack with the ol' lady. Then I had to take the munchkins shopping. Tommorow it's Christmas decorations and a tour of historic homes. By Sunday when the Cowboys are stinking up Washington I'll be wishing I was in the wet woods trying to start a fire.

I'd have Ronsonol lighter fluid though. I don't know why you guys punish yourself like that.
