Hey, LMG, how does your little girl take to camping? The handful of times we've taken ours car camping, she's really loved it. However, the backpacking trip, she was not so keen on, I believe because she slept between us with our bags mated and did not appreciate that as much. I'm willing to give the backpacking another shot, however. Mebbe this summer, but time is coming where carrying her is not going to be an option anymore, both because of her weight but also because she wants to walk!

Roseymonster...
She loves car camping - all of the comforts of home plus the cool fire to look at while being outside. Two of her favorite things. Backpacking is a little harder because of the sleeping, like you said.

We have started renting lookouts and small cabins (that you hike to) as a better option. This way, we don't have to worry about carrying a shelter and you have the benefit of a "building" to sleep in and that makes a difference for her because it isn't as "new" to her as a tent is. She sleeps fine in those - we kind of block an area off for her and make a little cozy sleeping area. Here's a pic from Hornet Lookout last August (clearly she's stressed out):

This year will be more challenging for us because we'll have two instead of just one! Definitely sticking with the cabins/lookouts for family backpack trips. :)

hahaha. What a cutie. That is a great idea for the backpacking approach. I've considered it, too. I'm gonna have to upgrade to a bigger tent anyway, if I plan on continuing to do that with the fam in the future (a certainty). Shires is making a four man now that weighs 4 lbs (http://www.tarptent.com/hogback.html), so that's on the wish list, but I have looked at renting forest service lookouts and cabins as well. Guess I'd better put in my reservation now. The lookouts sorta freak me out a bit because they are up so high!

Hey Rosey - the lookouts around here aren't up on stilts so there's no freak-out factor! :) I've been eying up a Hilleberg Nallo 4 but I damn near killed my husband when I told him it was "only" $800. :D

MarkO ~ you're coming to the NW? When? Where?

Yeah, the lookouts around here are about 40 feet up in the air. Oooh, I have a Nallo 2 man and it is one sweet tent. A little overkill for most of what I do but a bombproof shelter for sure. I imagine the 4 man is a little heavy tho...

That would be The Peninsula where Zeus lives up on Mount Olympus.
Ya know, "don't #&%!$ with me or I'll shove a lightning bolt up your azz!!".....that Zeus.

LMG, my #2 son is in Portland(the other Portland) and I plan to visit and perhaps even hike with the lad.

Heading up the North Fork - almost to the Canadian border. Weather looks promising so hoping for a small hike or two with the little ones. Prime territory for bear sighting and I hear they are starting to rise & shine. I'm sure we will stop at Polebridge for some baked goodness. :)

We're going to look at some fishies this weekend. This particular breeder has some good stock, but what intimidates me are his teeth. You'd have to see them to believe them. Yikes.
