Bechler River trail
This is a long but easy point-to-point hike (requiring a long shuttle) from the Lone Star trailhead to the Bechler Ranger Station at the Park's southern edge. And it has just about everything: falls, hot springs, a geyser, hot pools, a spectacular river canyon, wonderful fishing, big meadows, minimal traffic, and great scenery the entire trip. This corner of the Park escaped the big 1988 fire, so there are real forests too. As with any Park hike, you'll need a backcountry permit and you must camp in designated campsites. Reserve early, and be aware that most of the Bechler sites have a one- or two-night limit. Also the area isn't accessible until mid-July at the earliest because of high water and swampy conditions. If you hit this one in good weather, it's just about as good as it gets - in Yellowstone or anywhere else.
