Pedernales Falls / Primitive Camp
Pedernales Falls State Park is a typical Texas state park -- it accomodates the average park patron, and offers few challenges. The hike to the primitive camp area is no exception. This gravel road-bed hike to the primitive campground is 4 miles round-trip. The trail is relatively flat, with nothing exciting or even interesting to offer. There are no views, switchbacks, or challenges, and the 2 creek crossings are most likely always dry unless there has been significant rain (unusual in Austin). The trails are also used by mountain bikers, so watch out. The sites are located above the Pedernales River on a rocky bluff, but cedar trees obscure all vistas. The campsites are not marked, but the areas that offer the best camping are within 100 feet of the trail. Noise and distractions from other hikers and bikers is a problem, and since the park is only 40 miles from Austin, it is heavily used. If you want to backpack and primitive camp, this is your only choice in the park; but, save your energy for other trails such as Pedernales Falls.
