Lake Mineral Wells State Park
Here is some easy hiking in a nice little piece of wilderness (a reclaimed military base) that lets you stretch out your legs and shake down your gear in a part of Texas that's short on public land. The backcountry area is accessed at the equestrian campground and is designated for use by hikers, pack animals and bicycles. From the trailhead there is a hiker-only trail that drops down the hill to the right and a wide multi-use trail that goes straight past some of the old air base features. The first part of the hiker trail is nice if you want a short walk in the woods. There are some rocks on top of a hill from which you can kind of see the lake. Watch for poison ivy ½ mile down the trail, close to where it crosses the multi-use trail. I usually skip the first leg of the hiker trail and pick it up at the first crossing of the multi-use trail. The hiker trail ends at the primitive campground almost 3 miles out. There are nice grassy spots to camp and I've never seen it crowded, but no fires are allowed. Pack your own water and leave what little there usually is in the backcountry for the wildlife. You'll probably see deer, a large flock of buzzards and have a close encounter with at least one armadillo. If you like to hike, follow the system of multi-use trails to the back of the park, about 5 miles from the trailhead. This is a great nighttime hike. You can do 10 mile (or less) loops on these trails. For the adventurous, there are hills, valleys, creeks and meadows off the trail system to be explored. Mountain lions have been seen in the park.
