Adventure Hiking Trail
Pro's: Pay attention it's not marked well. If you want a well marked trail some of our state parks have some very nice black top trails. Great scenery, valleys, ohio river, ect. Shelters are nice and mostly leak proof. Take extra time at the Homestead Shelter, there is an old wash south west of the shelter which allows you to boulder down to the river. I've taken a group three years in a row and never run into another soul. (Early season mid-week) Study some maps so you know where to drop your water. Personally I don't mind treating from a few small streams very early in the season when there is little to know horse traffic, but it's just easier to drop. The trail does run through obannon state park but it is not maintained by the park. The majority of the park runs through Harris Craw State Forest. The attention the trail receives comes from volunteers. Kudos to them. If you have only two days the trail can be done, as long as you are in moderate to good shape. If you don't like hills this not the place for you. Cons: Scarcity of good water. The "Ohio River Shelter" burned down 07. There are a few short jaunts where horse and human tread together. The stretch between the Homestead and the Former Ohio River shelter can be noisy at times due to some kind of quarry work going in the valley just south of the river. There are a couple of old 4wd fire lanes. Overall I consider it a top pick close to home if you are considering a March or Early April Trip. Search and you will find surprisingly good maps available for low cost no cost.
